From 2020 to 2024, the civilian labor force — a figure representing the total number of people able to work, both employed and unemployed —grew by 4%, reflecting a net increase of 60,409. The number of people employed increased by 8%, a net increase of 102,156.

In a year when the metropolitan area added 6,420 people to the region, St. Louis city had a net loss of 3,077 people, mostly due to domestic migration. St. Louis city’s population declined by 3,077 from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, to 279,695 people, U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday shows. This reflects a 1.09% decrease and the fourth year in a row since 2020 that the city has seen its population decline.
