Fountain Valley Calif.-based MemorialCare laid off 58 employees on June 16 at its Long Beach (Calif.) Medical Center and Long Beach-based Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital, according to a WARN notice. “Earlier this week, the hospitals implemented changes resulting in the elimination of 58 positions and the reclassification of three from full-time to part-time roles,” a spokesperson for MemorialCare said in a June 18 statement shared with Becker’s.

The state of New York plans to invest $1 billion in SUNY Downstate’s hospital in New York City’s Brooklyn borough. The investment comes after months of community engagement led by SUNY Downstate’s Community Advisory Board and concerns about the $100 million annual deficit and deteriorating infrastructure at the hospital, according to a June 17 news release from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office.

The American Medical Group Association has urged the Senate to reject a June 16 Senate Finance Committee drafted bill that could slash nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and cut protections for Medicare Part B reimbursements. “The Senate Finance Committee’s draft bill will result in millions of Medicaid patients losing healthcare coverage and will put untenable stress on an already stretched healthcare system,” AMGA said in a June 18 news release.
