A man has been charged with murder after an Elvis Presley impersonator was found dead in his Parkes home following a night of karaoke at the local pub. Seventy-five-year-old Bernie Peri’s body was found inside his home in the state’s central west on Sunday afternoon after a concerned friend visited his home to check on him. Police launched Strike Force Brentwood to investigate his death after the grim discovery, and on Tuesday charged 28-year-old musician Marshall Karaitiana with murder.

Millions of dollars are being spent on contract nurses and overtime for already overworked staff to fill gaps in hospital rosters across NSW, the nurses’ union claims. New data highlights the state’s heavy reliance on agency staff, with nurses labelling the shortage of workers as a “crisis”. In the 2023-24 financial year, the NSW Ministry of Health spent more than $115m on agency costs for nurses and midwives.
