DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — The Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association, also known as CATRA, started out with two horses and four riders in 1985. The program now has 20 horses and they see about 100 riders a week. All of the riders come to CATRA with a physician’s prescription and a therapist evaluation. The head instructor, Shirley Nolt designs individualized programs to meet each of their cognitive and physical goals.

The Pennsylvania Literacy Coalition says just 33 percent of fourth graders in the state are proficient in reading. Students at that age are at a turning point in their academic careers when they go from learning to read to reading to learn. Former NFL tight end Deon Butler says he was cut from the team when he couldn’t read the playbook.
