The Trash Wheel family will be gaining a new member – its first in Baltimore County. Slated to be installed on the Back River, it will be the fifth trash-collecting water wheel in the Baltimore region. The new trash wheel is one of 21 environmental projects that will receive grants totaling $1.7 million, state and local officials announced Tuesday at Cox’s Point Park in Essex along the Back River.

Maryland gained its first adaptive mountain biking trail system in a state park this winter. Five miles of trail within Patapsco Valley State Park’s McKeldin Area – located along the border of Baltimore and Howard counties – were upgraded to be safer and more accessible to adaptive mountain bikers. Trails were widened, outslopes were smoothed to less than an 8% grade, and paths were altered so water will drain across instead of down the slopes.

Ladew Topiary Gardens’ annual Garden Festival will return for its 17th year on May 3, with vendors showcasing an array of plants and garden decor. The Garden Festival will take place rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3. Tickets to the festival can also be purchased on the Ladew Topiary Gardens website. The festival will feature at least 30 vendors, including new additions and returning faces.
