Jun. 24—HURON — The Splash Central Invitational was not short on Dakota Riptide swim club winners over the weekend at the team's annual summer home competition, which was held Friday, June 20 to Sunday, June 22. The competition was held at the Splash Central Water Park in Huron and the Riptide boys scored 25 first-place finishes, 13 silver medals and 20 bronze points to score 1,605 points to lead the field.

MITCHELL — The third community event held in a week’s span on Tuesday night was the most wide-ranging in terms of Mitchell voices heard from regarding a proposed state maximum security prison. Because of that, the community conversation sometimes strayed outside the lines of the Braver Angels-style debate and saw some tensions flare, as local residents grappled with the idea of a $650 million state prison being placed a few miles outside the city.

Jun. 20—COLOME, S.D. — Voters in the Colome School District will consider an opt-out measure on Tuesday, June 24 to consider a tax increase to help balance the school's budget. In May, the Colome school board voted to pass an opt-out resolution for $400,000 for five years and to hold a public vote on June 24 for the issue. The measure would allow the school district to opt out of the general fund tax limit for up to $400,000 for five years to help balance the school budget.

On June 3 in Pierre, a gaggle of Mitchell city leaders delivered an unambiguous message to the state’s prison construction work group. The city council, mayor, county commission, sheriff and various economic development officials were all in agreement: a patch of land south of Mitchell could easily host a new prison for 1,500 or more inmates, and their community would reap the benefits. That wall of official support has since cracked under the weight of fierce public opposition.
