CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Virginians receiving minimum wage will soon see a bump in pay. Starting January 1, it is going up from $12/hour to $12.41/hour. Virginia Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell who negotiated for this four years ago said it’s a step in the right direction. While it’s not a lot, it’s a step in the right direction. “The minimum wage going up as been really beneficial for people at lower income levels,” Surovell said.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - For another year in a row, Charlottesville’s economy is expanding. That’s according to Old Dominion University’s 2024 State of the Commonwealth Report. “Basically things are good,” Free Enterprise Forum President and Executive Director Neil Williamson said. Out of all of Virginia, the report lists the Charlottesville metro area as having the fastest real GDP growth in 2023 at 4.2%. These numbers come from data released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - With the winter holiday season also comes the risk of heart attacks. Chief of UVA Health’s Cardiovascular unit Doctor Christopher Kramer said the cold weather can lead to constriction of blood vessels. On top of that, the holidays often mean more rich food, salt, and alcohol. These are all things Dr. Kramer said make heart attacks more prone. Ways to keep your heart healthy all year long include not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and measuring blood pressure.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Myles Thurston bought Eljo’s Traditional Clothes a long time ago. “The store started in 1950. Two [University of Virginia] students,” Thurston recalls. They were brothers Ell and Jo Hyman, hence the stores name. “I came along in 1964 and worked my way up,” Thurston said. That lead to Thurston buying the store from the Hyman’s in 1984. He runs it alongside his son, Trent Thurston.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Now that December 25 has passed, you might be wondering what to do with your real Christmas tree. One free option is to recycle it. There are eight drop-off locations in and around Albemarle County that will take Christmas trees, including McIntire Recycling Center, Darden Towe Park, and Scottsville Community Center. You can take your tree between 7 a.m. until dark. All the trees donated will be chipped into mulch and available to pick-up beginning January 20.
