    When Astoria-set, mostly Oregon-shot, Steven Spielberg–guided pirate-treasure adventure film The Goonies hit theaters June 7, 1985, it was the biggest thing since E.T. for kids’ movies. Astoria has thrown annual Goonies Day parties since 2005, but the town and the Oregon Film Museum are going all out for the 40th anniversary of the Gen X touchstone. This year’s weekend celebration, June 5–8, includes bus tours of filming locations, ticketed photo ops on the Truffle Shuffle stump, and an ’80s prom.

    Someone is blasting Snoop on their phone when I change from the Green Line MAX to TriMet's Bus 30 at the Clackamas Town Center, and "Gin and Juice" plays in my head as the bus winds its way out of the parking lot and rolls onto SE 82nd Avenue. With someone else doing the driving on 82nd, I stay laid-back. And like Snoop, I'm pretty pleased with myself, though instead of downing gin and juice, the pair I'm excited to check off today is south and east.

    A century ago, the Oregon Electric Railway stopped in the namesake company town of the Oregon Nursery Company—Orenco is a portmanteau. World War I scuttled its export plans, and the company went bankrupt during the Depression. But the old rail segment became part of the Westside MAX in the 1990s, and land once covered with orchards and berry fields was suddenly a canvas for the city-planning buzzword of the day: transit-oriented development.
