Student to Coach: Shane Butler Transforms LBCC Diving

In his two seasons at Long Beach City College, humble and passionate dive coach and alumnus Shane Butler has impressively transformed the Viking dive program with state-qualifying athletes and his detail-oriented coaching method. This season at LBCC, three divers qualified for state championships with one female diver taking 4th place, while a male diver placed 10th.

The Los Angeles Sparks completed their five game stint at California State University, Long Beach with a win against the Washington Mystics with a score of 70-68 on Tuesday. Due to the renovation projects happening at Crypto.com Arena, the Sparks have made the Walter Pyramid on the campus of Cal State Long Beach their temporary home until the renovations are finished. Transitioning from volleyball to track, LBCC shotput star Saryah Harris-Davis finds herself on pace to break records and achieve greatness with her talent. Harris-Davis was always more devoted to playing volleyball, but becoming a volleyball coach for LBCC opened the door to new heights, in shot put. Harris-Davis is on pace to break Viking alumni shot putter Casey Davis’s Title IX record for farthest shot put throw, which sits at 12.76m (41’11”).
Baseball season end recap

Long Beach City College’s baseball team had their season come to an end when they were eliminated by Cerritos during the double elimination round of the super regionals. The Vikings ended this year with a 30-15 record after playing 45 games in total. This is the tenth time that this team has won thirty games for this city college in their 93rd season.

LBCC softball was eliminated by Palomar College in super regionals after a two-game series sweep on April 11, but its team chemistry paved the way for an outstanding season. The Vikings end their year with a 32-12 season record, a 17-4 conference record, and a first round regionals victory against Citrus College. “We haven’t had 30 wins here at Long Beach City since 2005 I believe.

Long Beach City College’s track & field qualified for regionals after overcoming the South Coast Conference Championship on Apr. 27. “They actually came out and competed during the whole track meet. Normally they don’t take it as serious, so this meet, they really came out and did their lifetime best,” Karen Vigilant, women’s head coach said.

Sophomore Olin Snakenborg launched a three run home run in the sixth inning as the Vikings were able to comeback and beat Compton 9-5 on Tuesday. “It was definitely a lot of energy, something that carried us through the rest of the game offensively and defensively, just bringing a little bit more energy,” Snakenborg said. Snakenberg had a 1-3 hitting performance and now has a .301 batting average for the season.

The Vikings dominated the Allan Hancock Bulldogs, clinching a solid 10-3 win in a non-conference game on Monday. Leading the way was pitcher Liam Taylor, who helped limit the Bulldogs to just two runs in five innings while striking out five batters. After pitching two innings apiece, pitchers Luis Guzman and Brian Pham controlled the ship and allowed the Bulldogs to score only one more run in the last period of the game.
