The holidays are a great time to gather and create new memories or reminisce about holidays past. Going home for the holidays often brings great joy – as well as great stress. If I were asked, if we live in an age of discontent and had less than 10 seconds to decide on the answer, I’d most likely yell: Yes! To explore one of the factors possibly creating discontent in current times, I will however base my exploration on something more substantial than my gut feeling. Despite being ancient, it still fascinates and teaches some of the most brilliant academics of our time: Buddhist thinking.

Christopher Lasch’s The Culture of Narcissism describes how the individualization and emphasize on personal success on one hand, and the failing of structures linking individuals gave rise to narcissism. In a society divided by filter bubbles, echo chambers and self-indulgence on social media platforms — some salute his arguments for standing the test of time. In 2023, Lasch’s observation of an increasingly lost sense of reality (‘What even is real anymore, Chat GPT?’) rings almost prophetic.
