It was one of the strangest phone calls I've ever received. A public relations officer for a big legal firm was on the other end of the line, asking if I'd been ringing some of their clients. I hadn't. But somebody had, and they'd been impersonating me. It was one of many dirty tricks that was used over a period of more than four and a half years while I reported on one of the biggest financial scandals Australia has ever seen. Smear campaigns, intimidation, threats, fake identities and surveillance.

TIM ROXBURGH: Hey Tim Roxburgh here with Background Briefing. This episode we're trying to get to the bottom of why some workers are suffering through conditions most Australians would just never tolerate? To find out... we're heading up north... to meet some people who've been asking those same questions for a decade or more.

TIM ROXBURGH: Tim Roxburgh here for Background Briefing. Before we start this episode a quick update on one of our previous big investigations. Alice Brennan: I'm Alice Brennan and you're listening to Background Briefing. This week Mario Christodoulou lifts the lid on one of the world's fastest-growing scams. They're called binary option scams. Don't be baffled by the name. There are questions about whether authorities and big tech companies are doing enough to stop them. Now, Mario, I have to admit that until you started this story I had never heard of binary options scams, and when you first mentioned it to me, I had a little snooze.

We've been doing a lot of work looking at a violent 2018 police encounter in Byron Bay. When these controversial incidents happen it's important to investigate them. So in that spirit wanted to acknowledge our friends at @ACurrentAffair9 who first broke that story. Amazing work!
