Chadron High School hosts youth talent showcase

Sunday afternoon at the Chadron High School auditorium, folks were treated to a wide variety of young talent, as the Kiwanis Stars of Tomorrow returned. There were a total of 10 acts this year, incorporating 16 youth from kindergarten through Grade 12.
NNTA conducts annual meeting

Last week, the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association conducted it’s annual meeting, re-electing board members and bringing on a newcomer, as well as providing updates on NNTA activities. Following the election, Kate Pope, Brad Retchless and Randy Burk will retain their positions on the board, with Kurt Kinbacher joining. Also during the meeting, Kerri Remmp of the Volksmarch subcommittee provided an update on the upcoming May 17 Volksmarch on May 17.
Welch grateful for teaching career

Just a few months shy of 20 years teaching, High School Spanish Teacher Cheryl Welch announced her retirement at the end of the current school year. “I really enjoy teaching. I’ve enjoyed my career as a teacher,” Welch said. She and her husband, Steve, moved to Chadron for her to go to school with no intention of staying initially. However, they found a nice place to live and local jobs, and really enjoyed the school system, so they felt content raising their daughters Greta and Mackenzie here.

No foolin': Chadron woman will be 80 years young

CHADRON, Neb. — Though April 1 is commonly known as April Fool’s Day, it’s no joke that it also marks Donna Bieganski’s 80th birthday this year. Born in Chadron, Bieganski wasn’t here too long after her birth. Her father, Don Rickenbach, was in the Army Air Corps. He and Donna’s mother, Jean Rickenbach, were at Marana Air Base north of Tucson, Arizona.

Boys Golf starts next week

Though originally scheduled to tee off with a dual against Alliance at Ridgeview, the Chadron Boys Golf season will get underway on Tuesday, April 1, with a quad against Alliance, Bayard and Bridgeport, at Alliance’s Skyview Golf Course. Coach CJ Bach noted there are a couple returners — Zane Cullers and Tobin Meyer — who qualified for State last year, with a total roster of 18, including four freshmen. There are also eight sophomores, all of whom are decent golfers.
City Transit rolls out new van

During the Chadron City Council’s March 17 meeting, City Transit Director Julie Lawrence brought the latest addition to the transit program, a 2024 Chrysler Voyager XL. Acquired on March 4, the new van is a five-seater with space for a wheelchair. Lawrence noted this vehicle was ordered over a year ago and does not replace one of the regular buses. It is an addition that allows drivers to economically provide transportation to Rapid City, Alliance and other remote locations since it uses less fuel.
