The Gering City Council has authorized Mayor Kent Ewing to sign a bill of sale pertaining to the pavilion at West Lawn Cemetery. Care of the pavilion, which has undergone a complete reconstruction over the last four years thanks to the efforts of Gering Post 36 of the American Legion, was entrusted to the city, which will now assume all liability and property insurance responsibility.

Scotts Bluff County will soon have the power to impose and enforce no parking zones in county road right-of-way zones via resolution. The topic of parking in county right-of-ways was brought before the county board on Monday evening by highway superintendent Steve Baird. Baird informed the board that his department has encountered problems with vehicles parked in such zones, and that little progress has been made in resolving them by requesting the vehicles be moved.

The Gering City Council heard an update on its electrical grid study on Monday evening. Jim Herchenbach of RVW Inc. presented the results of the electrical study to the council, and outlined a three-phase plan for completing its voltage conversion and increasing the overall reliability of the grid. In brief, the planned phases will continue the ongoing conversion from a 4160V to a 12.47kV system, and reduce the overall number of substations across the city.

Gering Public Schools marked the official completion of its new preschool building at Northfield Elementary on Monday. After a short introduction by district communications director Jennifer Sibal, school board president BJ Peters spoke on the significance of the preschool project, which has been described as revolutionary due to the heavy involvement of the district’s construction trades students.

The 2024 Monument Marathon achieved record high numbers both in attendance and funds raised for the Western Nebraska Community College Foundation. The marathon’s myriad successes were announced during a Nov. 19 press conference at WNCC, where race director and WNCC Foundation executive director Jennifer Reisig unveiled the record breaking $78,670 raised this year. “To give you a little bit of context, the Monument Marathon has averaged about $46,000 over the first 12 years,” Reisig said.
