    LEWISTON — Several vehicles were struck but nobody was hurt Friday afternoon when an unidentified gunman opened fire near a mosque at the bottom of Bartlett Street hill. Witnesses reported hearing as many as a dozen shots ringing out at about 2:30 p.m. It was the third time in a week that the downtown has been rattled by gunfire and the second time shots have been fired near the mosque since the start of the year.

    LEWISTON — A local man was shot Saturday on Bartlett Street and police were searching for the shooter on Monday. Police said Malik Hollis, 29, was shot sometime around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of Bartlett and Walnut streets. Police said when they responded to reports of gunfire in the area, officers found him “hiding in an apartment, suffering from two gunshot wounds.”Witnesses reported seeing the shooting victim climbing a fence as he scrambled from the shooting scene.

    SABATTUS — For the second time in four years, town residents voted to keep their police department intact. But the vote was a lot closer this time than it was in 2021. Through a secret ballot Monday night, 83 Sabattus residents voted to stick with the local police force while 73 voted in favor of turning police matters over to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

    LEWISTON — A man already facing felony charges in Rumford was arrested Tuesday night in Lewiston and charged with firing shots at passing cars downtown. Troy Blanchard, 35, of Rumford, faces multiple charges, including reckless conduct with a firearm, creating a police standoff, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of scheduled drugs.
