Bull elk and black bear hunting remain very popular in Missouri, based on the number of people applying for permits. The latest numbers from the Missouri Department of Conservation show 5,249 bear applications and 8,409 bull elk applications were received last month for this year’s respective hunting seasons. Last year, the department received 9,300 bull elk applications and 5,969 black bear applications. Two years ago, 5,374 people applied for bear permits and over 8,562 for elk permits.

Former southwest Missouri Congressman Billy Long is still waiting to see if he’ll be the next commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. A vote on Long’s nomination is expected today but as of press time has not happened. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee met Tuesday to offer final statements on his nomination, starting with committee chairman Mike Crapo, R-Idaho. He supports Long’s nomination and urges the committee to vote for him.

Missouri is not assisting Arkansas yet in the manhunt to find the “Devil in the Ozarks.” Simply put, Missouri has not been asked to help find Grant Hardin, the 56-year-old former Arkansas police chief who escaped from prison more than a week ago. The search is being led by the FBI and U.S. Marshal’s offices in Little Rock, with help from local law enforcement agencies in Arkansas.

U.S. Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo. 7th District, wants people from across Missouri and elsewhere to visit his region. He spent last week’s break from Capitol Hill touting tourism in southwestern Missouri. “What better place can you go where you’re able to be on the lake one day? Go watch a Branson show, go to an amusement park, go shopping, and the outdoor places,” Burlison told Missourinet.
