LINCOLN — Would-be hemp farmers and processors finally have their chance to put some seed in the ground and reap a legal harvest in Nebraska. The state Department of Agriculture opened up licensing applications Friday for the 2019 growing season. LINCOLN — A months-long battle over how to implement Nebraska’s new voter identification requirement continued Wednesday, with the sponsor of the main implementation proposal threatening to kill her own bill. State Sen. Julie Slama of Dunbar filed a motion to withdraw Legislative Bill 535 shortly after the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee advanced an amended version of the bill.

Nearing the end of the session, Nebraska lawmakers on Tuesday passed more than a dozen bills that had been combined into two separate pieces of legislation — a strategy meant to counter an ongoing filibuster that has slowed progress on the floor. The Nebraska Legislature passed two bills (LB565 and 683), both of which will now go to Gov. Jim Pillen's desk to be signed into law.

A plan for implementing Nebraska’s new voter identification requirements cleared a major hurdle Monday, despite fierce objections from the senator who led efforts to put voter ID on the ballot. Senators advanced LB514 past first-round consideration on a 43-1 vote, after adding an amendment backed by the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. State Sen. Tom Brewer of Gordon, the committee chairman, said the amendment was the product of weeks of work.
