No wonder Macy Ringlein plans on a career in health care. A senior at Kearney Catholic High School, she was in seventh grade when COVID-19 disrupted the school year. When she was in the eighth grade, a dislocated kneecap kept her out of the state track finals. In the ninth grade, she was sidelined by a concussion. As a sophomore, she had shoulder surgery. As a junior, she developed centralized regional pain syndrome, a condition when the nervous system is misfiring. “My back was on fire,” she said.

With Wednesday’s balmy weather, Larry Greenwalt decided it was time to get his 1922 Dodge Brothers Touring Car convertible out of hibernation and take it for a spin. He had decked out that car in red, white and blue. He put a patriotic wreath on the grill in front, bunting on the back and flowers along the sides. Besides, it was his 66th birthday. Greenwalt climbed into that vintage automobile and headed out. “Everyone was honking and waving. They said, ‘Give us a ride,’ so I did,” he said.

It’s been roughly 65 years, but I can still hear my mother reading the news on Cleveland radio station WGAR as if she’s doing it now. When I was growing up, that was a Mother’s Day tradition. My father was news director at WGAR, a 50,000-watt powerhouse back then. On the Friday before Mother’s Day, the wives of the station’s on-air personalities — newscasters, sportscasters and disc jockeys, all men back then — would take over the microphones. This promotion was a big hit.

White smoke was coming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. That meant a new pope had been selected. They all watched. Stepping out onto the balcony at St. Peter’s Square was Robert Prevost, a Chicago-born cardinal who took the name Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, he is the first American ever elected pope.
