    When George Romero died from lung cancer in 2017, he left behind several ideas and screenplays for zombie movies. One was a treatment, “Twilight of the Dead,” and his widow, Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, described it as a “summing up” of the franchise, an ending to what began with “Night of the Living Dead” in 1968 and continued for five decades and six flesh-gnawing movies. Romero was the rare artist who invented a major modern monster, one whose popularity rivals that of vampires and ghosts.

    This is Mikael Owunna’s season. The artist is experiencing a deep sense of gratitude in being recognized by the city that quite literally birthed him. The Highland Park native Is one of five History Makers Award winners chosen by the Senator John Heinz History Center. They will be honored at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at an awards dinner at the History Center in the Strip District. Owunna was chosen for his art.

    It was 1974 when Richard Nixon became the first U.S. president to resign from office, Stephen King’s novel Carrie horrified readers and teenagers danced to disco music in platform shoes. That same year, Outreach Teen & Family Services opened a small office that looked like a living room in Central Square on Washington Road. There, students could drop in to talk about their problems with a counselor or a volunteer. The new organization, then called Outreach South, was progressive and proactive.

    There are certain plays we admire for their timeless quality, that somehow not only survive, but thrive over decades, centuries, and even millennia. “Oedipus Rex” and “Hamlet,” for example, have proven themselves in this respect, while others like “Waiting for Godot,” and “American Buffalo” certainly have the potential to join them.
