The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium announced Sunday the death of a 17-year-old Masai giraffe that had been under treatment for a chronic condition since last summer and whose condition deteriorated last week. In an announcement posted online, zoo officials said the giraffe, Sox, was euthanized Friday. The giraffe had been treated for “chronic degeneration of the bones in her leg,” according to the announcement.

A major winter storm battered the eastern region of the United States with snow and bone-chilling temperatures on Monday, though the Pittsburgh region was largely spared the worst of it. David Shallenberger, lead meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Moon, said the storm ended up producing snowfall about four to six inches less than originally expected across the region, with Pittsburgh recording one to three inches by 6 p.m. Monday.
