FAIRFIELD — Eight Solano County schools were selected to compete next week in the Sac-Joaquin Section softball playoffs. Vanden High School was the top seed among them. The Lady Vikings were given the No. 2 seed in Division III and will host No. 15 Christian Brothers on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Vanden is 17-4 and co-champions of the Monticello Empire League with a 10-2 record. The Lady Vikings enter the playoffs having won 13 straight games.

FAIRFIELD — BJ Smith's two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning helped give the Rodriguez High School baseball team an extra cushion in an 11-4 win over Tracy Thursday in what turned out to be a contentious Sac-Joaquin Section playoff opener. The Mustangs scored four runs in the inning to turn a tight 7-4 lead in the Division II game into the 11-4 final at home. A brief altercation between a baserunner and third baseman during the game brought out the fire in both teams.

FAIRFIELD — Trustin Mitchell was named the Most Valuable Player of the Greater Sacramento League Monday and showed why Wednesday as the Fairfield High School baseball team earned a stunning 2-1 win over host Christian Brothers in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff opener. Fairfield rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning and got 6.1 strong innings from Mitchell for the upset victory. The Falcons were the No. 13 seed in Division III and brought an end to the season of the No. 4 Falcons.

FAIRFIELD — The Armijo High School baseball team took on Jesuit – the top seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs – and grabbed an early lead before succumbing in the end in a 11-4 defeat. An upset bid was on the minds of the No. 16 Royals early when they grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. But Jesuit scored all 11 of its runs between the third and sixth inning to put the game away.

FAIRFIELD — Fairfield High School's Trustin Mitchell was named the Most Valuable Player of the Greater Sacramento League and Armijo's Willie Nickson was the Pitcher of the Year in voting by head coaches Monday night. Fairfield and Armijo were co-champions of the GSL with 13-1 records. A combined nine players from the two schools earned all-GSL honors. Mitchell had a .561 batting average during the league season with 23 hits, 25 runs scored, 24 RBI, five doubles, three triples and one home run.
