My heart goes out to all those affected by the LA area fires. I lived in West Hollywood and worked in Santa Monica in late 1988-early 1989. Some of the buildings destroyed are ones I remember. I also remember those good people from the Pacific Palisades I served at the lumber counter at Fisher Lumber when it was on the southwest corner of 14th and Colorado in Santa Monica.

The death of Jimmy Carter brings to mind some of the courageous decisions he made in his presidency. His bringing together of Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin in the Camp David Accords began a possible long-term peace solution that was ended by the religious fanatics' assassinations of Sadat in 1981 and Yitzhak Rabin in 1995. We have seen the slow-motion annihilation of those in Gaza and the West Bank ever since.

A football team last year went 3-9. It lost its last two games by the combined score of 108-46. That team lost by 52 to Utah and was blanked by Fresno State. It had a first-year coach who had problems with injuries. At the end of the season the team looked like a mess. This year that team is 10-2 and playing this coming Saturday for a conference championship. The team's name? Arizona State University.

From January, 2002 until January 2022 the Federal Reserve kept interest rates near 0%. Except for a few years of before the pandemic, when it rose to 2.4%, there had been a distortion of the normal interest rates from the historical average of 5.5%, which is where it is now. For most of the last 50 years the inflation rate has been below the Fed Fund Rate, making is prudent to save money. But during the time I'll call the "0% Generation", the inflation rate was above the fund rate.

The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer:I risk losing a lot of friends and allies in the Democratic Party by saying the obvious, but the Democratic Party has failed the electorate this year at the national level. There are specific reasons for this. 1) The Harris campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, lost 11,000,000 votes since 2020. Joe Biden had 81,000,000 votes in 2020 and Kamala Harris has about 70,000,000 in 2024.
