Jeannine James, 59, who was first elected as mayor in 2017, is seeking her third term. She is contested by lifetime La Plata resident and former long-time town council member Ralph Wayne Winkler, 82.

Charles CountyIndian Head man charged with theft schemeOn April 14 at 5:21 a.m., Charles sheriff's officers responded to Charleston Court in La Plata for the report of a stolen vehicle. A man told officers that at approximately 5:15 a.m. he started his vehicle and went back inside to get his coffee. When he came back outside, he reported that his car was gone. Officers canvassed the area for the Toyota 4Runner, valued at approximately $50,000, but could not find the vehicle.

A La Plata firefighter, who just joined the department's ranks approximately a week prior, surrendered himself to Delaware authorities on April 15 after being charged with a hate crime. The La Plata Volunteer Fire Department was made aware of the arrest the following day of one of its newest members, Jay Droney.

A body, suspected to be a missing Waldorf woman, was found in Cedarville State Forest approximately a week and a half after the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said that they suspected foul play in her disappearance. Now, her boyfriend and his uncle are being charged in connection with her death.
