Despite a rainy day, the youth of Charles County had something to smile about on Tuesday. Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland hosted a grand opening celebration for its new Indian Head Club on May 13 that brought together civic leaders, elected officials and community partners to mark the occasion. This marks the first Boys & Girls Club to open in Charles County.

Charles County’s fiscal year 2026 budget public hearing on May 7 could be described as déjà vu if you watched last year’s meeting. Public schools officials came out en masse to let the Charles County commissioners know how they felt after not getting their budget ask for the second year in a row, despite the county giving the system an $11.2 million increase and exceeding the required maintenance of effort by $8.9 million.

A Waldorf man will spend 45 years in prison after his conviction for killing a 17-year-old student outside his home. The state’s attorney for Charles County, announced that on May 12, Charles County Circuit Court Judge Monise A. Stephenson sentenced Elijah Bernard Barnes, 20, of Waldorf to 45 years in prison for the second-degree murder of Rajon Lateef Jackson III, 17, as well as related charges. La Plata’s new Town Council’s first meeting ended in just a few brief minutes after a failure to approve a motion to accept an agenda. A special meeting was called to order following the town council’s swearing-in. Mayor Jeannine James called for the approval of the agenda for the meeting, which is a standard procedure done at the beginning of every meeting.
