MOREHEAD CITY - The Morehead City council came together Tuesday to honor one of their own, William Nathaniel "Nat" Festerman Jr., who retired from the Morehead City Police Department after a 24-year career of service to the community. Council chambers were full of Festerman's friends, family and coworkers Aug. 8 as Mayor Jerry Jones and Police Chief Bryan Dixon shared their appreciation and warm sentiments. With a passion for beekeeping that began in high school and spans over five decades, a local man’s dedication and contributions to the community have earned him the prestigious title of N.C. State Beekeepers Association’s Beekeeper of the Year. Eric Talley of Hubert explained it took him completely by surprise when he received his award in July at the association’s annual summer meeting in Hendersonville. “I was sitting in the crowd, and they are reading off accomplishments,” Talley said.

NEWPORT - Emergency responders with the Newport Police and Fire departments are credited with assisting a driver after they drove their vehicle into a pond. Officers investigated a single-vehicle collision on Saturday, Aug. 5 near Old Fashioned Way and Nine Foot Road. When police arrived, they found a red pickup truck in the retention pond between Bojangles and the Twice the Ice kiosk. Police report that no one was injured.

MOREHEAD CITY - The Morehead City Port is reporting record revenue in fiscal year 2023 as the business continues to expand and push its capabilities. The N.C. State Ports Authority recorded $79.3 million in revenue this fiscal year, marking a 16.7% increase from the previous year's record of $68 million. The performance was driven by a strong annual intermodal growth and year-over-year growth in throughput volume, according to a press release from Port communications manager Elly Cosgrove.

MOREHEAD CITY - Morehead City came alive on Aug. 1 as residents joined the Morehead City Police Department, Morehead City Fire-EMS and various other local agencies for the annual National Night Out event at Rotary Park. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that takes place on the first Tuesday of August across the United States.
