MOREHEAD CITY — A 517.1-pound blue marlin sealed more than just victory Saturday at the 67th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament – it delivered redemption, emotion, and a $2.59 million payday to the crew aboard Big Trouble. The 64-foot Precision, captained by Chris Daniels and based in Morehead City, brought the only marlin of the week to exceed the 500-pound mark. That made it eligible for both the $807,500 Fabulous Fisherman’s prize and the tournament’s top payout.

NEWPORT — Newport Town Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to adopt a $6.1 million general fund budget for fiscal year 2025-26, opting for a reduced property tax rate of 45.5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, down from the 47-cent rate initially proposed earlier this month. The 45.5-cent rate is 6.2 cents higher than the town’s revenue neutral rate of 39.3 cents, representing a 15.8% increase over the revenue neutral level calculated following this year’s countywide property revaluation.
