NEWPORT — The Town of Newport has proposed a $13.6 million budget for fiscal year 2026, a 10.7 percent increase over the current year’s $12.3 million budget. The recommended budget sets the town’s property tax rate at 47 cents per $100 of assessed value, down from the current rate of 54.5 cents but 9 cents above the revenue-neutral rate of 38 cents following the countywide property revaluation that has prompted major rate adjustments across Carteret’s 11 municipalities.

MOREHEAD CITY — The state’s billfish tournament season kicked off last weekend with the 31st annual Hatteras Village Offshore Open. The tournament, which opens the N.C. Billfish Series, drew a fleet of 54 boats competing for a $400,775 purse. Carteret County boats dominated the competition, led by Redemption out of Atlantic Beach.

Swansboro’s Tezzy Cunningham was selected to play in the prestigious 51st annual N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game on July 21 in the Swarm Fieldhouse at the Greensboro Coliseum complex. The game pits the state’s best high school seniors from the East against the West.
