NEWPORT — A public hearing for a rezoning request tied to a planned unit development drew a crowd at the Newport Town Council’s April meeting on Thursday. The request, submitted by Cary-based civil engineering firm WithersRavenel on behalf of Texas-based developer D.R. Horton sought to rezone 201.1 acres at 5675 Highway 70 from Residential Agricultural (R-20) and Commercial Highway (CH) districts to Planned Unit Development (PUD). The proposed 562-home neighborhood would be named Wildwood.

Coming into this week, the Pirates’ girls soccer team was tied atop the 3A Coastal Conference standings after two key wins last week. The team defeated West Carteret 1-0 on April 1 and took down Croatan 2-0 in overtime on Friday, April 4, moving to 6-2-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Its league record is tied with Richlands, with both teams highly ranked in the 3A east, too. The Wildcats (9-6-1 overall) are ranked No. 10 and the Pirates are No. 12.

David Murray claimed first place in the whole hog cooking competition, edging out a field of roughly 65 cooks. Andy Harrison took second place, followed by David Hoffman in third, Randall White in fourth, and Kevin Peterson in fifth.
