Family Fun Night coming to Lynn View Community Center Jan. 18

KINGSPORT — It soon will be glow time in the Lynn Garden section of the Model City. The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Family Fun Night event Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Lynn View Community Center, 257 Walker St.The event will take place from 7-9 p.m. and feature multiple games of glow dodgeball. There is a cost, which is available online,Glow events are when participants wear neon or white clothes, the lights of a gym are turned off and the black lights are turned on.

AbstractGenome-wide association studies (GWAS) identify genetic variants underlying complex traits but are limited by stringent genome-wide significance thresholds. We present GRIN (Gene set Refinement through Interacting Networks), which increases confidence in the expanded gene set by retaining genes strongly connected by biological networks when GWAS thresholds are relaxed. GRIN was validated on both simulated interrelated gene sets as well as multiple GWAS traits.

I’ve been asked a few times now what to do about online safety if the Kids Online Safety Act is no good. I will take it as a given that not enough is being done to make the Internet safe, especially for children. I think there is enough evidence to show that while the Internet can be a positive for many young people, especially marginalized youth that find support online, there are also significant negatives that correlate to real world harms that lead to suffering.

Tom Brodbeck’s opinion essays (Winnipeg Free Press, July 28, 2023), rightly points out that in Winnipeg, at least, there has been “a breakdown of accountability measures to monitor the mistreatment” of residents of personal-care homes. Obviously, the physical and sexual abuse of care home residents needs to be corrected immediately and those who are guilty need to be punished. It would be wrong, however, to assume that all care homes and all their employees are mistreating residents.

Wired.com had another story with a climate change hook on July 20 called, “An Abandoned Arctic Military Base Just Spilled a Scientific Secret.” It began “During the Cold War, the US built a network of tunnels in the Greenland ice sheet. Sixty years later, the base has provided a critical clue about the climate crisis.”From 1959 to 1966, Project Iceworm in Greenland was meant to establish military bases in caverns carved out of glacial ice, with Camp Century being the trial run.

Fascinating right? But why is this bit of local news a top-of-the-hour blast from government radio? You know why: the whole of mainstream press has shifted completely from COVID panic to Climate Change panic.
