GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The iconic Blue Bridge in downtown Grand Rapids will shine orange this weekend to honor victims of gun violence. National Gun Violence Awareness day is Friday, June 6 this year, marking the beginning of Wear Orange Weekend, an annual gun safety awareness campaign. The Blue Bridge will be illuminated with bright orange lights through dusk on Sunday, June 8, in coordination with the movement, according to a news release from Wear Orange.

WYOMING, MI – A shuttered Walgreens on 28th Street across from the popular Beltline Bar restaurant is being turned into a supermarket where customers can shop for fresh produce, meats and baked goods. A new Rodriguez Supermarket is being built at 2829 Division Ave. S in Wyoming, city records show. The store’s owners have not yet announced plans for the new location, but the city of Wyoming approved the site plans for the project in October 2024.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids residents can now apply for city funds to support grassroots projects aimed at fostering connection, inclusion and civic pride in their neighborhoods. Now through June 30, the city’s Neighborhood Match Fund (NMF) program is accepting applications for proposed initiatives and projects that would take place September through February 2026.

KENT COUNTY, MI – The Wyoming Department of Public Safety is getting new body cameras, cruiser cameras, updated Tasers and a new AI report-writing service as part of big technology upgrade. Police Chief Kimberly Koster said the new AI feature will save report-writing time, giving officers more time to be out in the streets serving residents. The Wyoming City Commission approved a new 10-year, $5.9 million technology contract with Axon Enterprise, Inc. on Monday, June 2.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids families can begin picking up summer passes for the city’s public pools before they open on Friday, June 6. The city is hosting three pool pass nights this week where residents can stop by their neighborhood pool to register, pick up a pass or get their photo taken, according to a news release. Free season passes are still available for Grand Rapids youth throughThursday, June 5. After that date, the youth passes will be available for $5.
