Man dies after shot multiple times near two Olathe schools

Police are investigating a homicide after they found a 21-year-old man shot multiple times in a neighborhood near two Olathe schools Saturday night. Officers were called to East Mart-Way Circle around 9:54 p.m. The area is near Santa Fe Middle School and Washington Elementary School. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.Detectives contacted a 25-year-old man, and they took him into custody. Charges are pending. Police say there's no current threat to public safety.

Firefighters with the Kansas City Fire Department are investigating after a large fire Saturday morning.They were called to Batliner Recycling on Front Street around 6:45 a.m. They found a large fire involving several semitrailers and large piles of recyclable materials. Crews shut down nearby railroad lines in order to get water lines across the tracks. For the first time ever, KCFD used a remote-operated tracker robot capable of supplying 2,500 gallons of water per minute.

A fire captain in Johnson County, Missouri, has died in the line of duty. The Johnson County Fire Protection District says Captain Vernon Collett collapsed while actively fighting a natural cover fire in a rural part of the county. Despite nearly an hour of lifesaving efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead. Captain Collett had served in the district for 29 years. The district sends its deepest condolences to Collett's family, friends and colleagues.

The Prairie Village Police Department got the call around 9:20 p.m. for the location at 4100 W. 83rd St. Detectives say a suspect walked into the business and stole several hundred dollars in cash from the register. He then left in a red Ford Fusion.
Two children are dead after explosion, house fire in rural Butler

Two children, both two years old, are dead after an explosion and house fire in rural Butler, Missouri. First responders were called to a home on Pine Street near Henry Street, just outside of city limits, around 11:30 p.m. Friday. They found the house fully engulfed in flames. Three of the five people who lived there were able to get out safely. However, crews couldn't rescue the two children. Fire units arrived on scene and requested assistance from additional agencies.
