Rox Dene’s owner, horsewoman Dorothy Elaine Boylen of Keswick, Virginia, died July 23 at age 84. To honor her, we’re looking back at the time the Chronicle named her mare Rox Dene as its 1994 Overall and Show Hunter Horse of the Year. Rox Dene died at age 33 in 2019. A version of this article originally ran in the Feb. 3, 1995, issue of the Chronicle. Rox Dene is a contradiction. She’s a horse, but she prefers to be with people.

Versailles, France—Aug. 6Great Britain’s Harry Charles, who was 11th in yesterday’s individual jumping qualifier at the Paris Olympic Games will not be competing today. He announced on social media that his mount, Romeo 88, overreached and was not 110%. “Maybe I’m a little disappointed but honestly not really!” wrote Charles.

Versailles, France—Aug. 5After 73 rounds of jumping, French rider Julien Epaillard had the fastest clear round of the day with Dubai Du Cerde to earn the top qualifying spot to tomorrow’s individual show jumping final at the Paris Olympics. Two Irishmen are right behind him, with Shane Sweetnam (James Kann Cruz) and Daniel Coyle (Legacy) in second and third. Karl Cook and Caracole De La Roque turned in the sole clear for the U.S. riders, finishing in 16th.

Versailles, France—Aug. 4The order of go has been set for the individual show jumping qualifier for at the Paris Olympic Games, and 74 are expected to jump. The United States is sticking with the line-up from the team competition. Kent Farrington, who withdrew from the team competition just before the two-hour deadline, citing allergy issues for his mount Greya, did not present the mare at the second horse inspection.

Versailles, France—Aug. 2Only nine teams will compete this afternoon in the jumping team final at the Paris Olympics. Mexico was 10th in yesterday’s qualifier to earn a spot in the final, however the team had to withdraw after Carlos Hank Guerreiro’s Porthos Maestro WH Z was withdrawn for veterinary reasons.

The United States has won its third consecutive Olympic team silver—and its first medal in equestrian sports this year—at the Paris Olympic Games. The team of Laura Kraut and Baloutinue, Karl Cook and Caracole De La Roque, and McLain Ward and Ilex finished on a final score of 4 faults behind gold medalist Great Britain, which posted just 2 time penalties across its three riders. Host country France was third with a final score of 7 faults.

Versailles, France—Aug. 1The U.S. Equestrian Federation has announced a change ahead of the team competition for the U.S. Olympic Jumping Team today at Versailles. Karl Cook and Caracole De La Roque will replace Kent Farrington and Greya in today’s team qualifier, which begins at 11:00 a.m. local time (5:00 a.m. ET).

Versailles, France—Aug. 1The United States Show Jumping Team’s day started with a bit of upheaval. Just about an hour before the team jumping qualifier started at the Paris Olympics, the U.S. Equestrian Federation sent out a press release announcing that Tokyo Olympian Kent Farrington would not be competing and reserve rider Karl Cook would be taking his spot. Despite the dust-up to their plan, the U.S. accomplished what they were hoping to do: qualify for the team final tomorrow.

It’s been three years since the U.S. squad of Jessica Springsteen, McLain Ward and Laura Kraut stood on the podium, having earned silver at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Ward (Ilex) and Kraut (Baloutinue) are back at the Paris Olympic Games, this time joined by Kent Farrington (Greya), who competed as an individual in Japan, and Karl Cook (Caracole De La Roque) who will serve as the traveling alternate.
