Rox Dene’s owner, horsewoman Dorothy Elaine Boylen of Keswick, Virginia, died July 23 at age 84. To honor her, we’re looking back at the time the Chronicle named her mare Rox Dene as its 1994 Overall and Show Hunter Horse of the Year. Rox Dene died at age 33 in 2019. A version of this article originally ran in the Feb. 3, 1995, issue of the Chronicle. Rox Dene is a contradiction. She’s a horse, but she prefers to be with people.

Versailles, France—Aug. 6Great Britain’s Harry Charles, who was 11th in yesterday’s individual jumping qualifier at the Paris Olympic Games will not be competing today. He announced on social media that his mount, Romeo 88, overreached and was not 110%. “Maybe I’m a little disappointed but honestly not really!” wrote Charles.

Versailles, France—Aug. 5After 73 rounds of jumping, French rider Julien Epaillard had the fastest clear round of the day with Dubai Du Cerde to earn the top qualifying spot to tomorrow’s individual show jumping final at the Paris Olympics. Two Irishmen are right behind him, with Shane Sweetnam (James Kann Cruz) and Daniel Coyle (Legacy) in second and third. Karl Cook and Caracole De La Roque turned in the sole clear for the U.S. riders, finishing in 16th.

Versailles, France—Aug. 4The order of go has been set for the individual show jumping qualifier for at the Paris Olympic Games, and 74 are expected to jump. The United States is sticking with the line-up from the team competition. Kent Farrington, who withdrew from the team competition just before the two-hour deadline, citing allergy issues for his mount Greya, did not present the mare at the second horse inspection.

Versailles, France—Aug. 2Only nine teams will compete this afternoon in the jumping team final at the Paris Olympics. Mexico was 10th in yesterday’s qualifier to earn a spot in the final, however the team had to withdraw after Carlos Hank Guerreiro’s Porthos Maestro WH Z was withdrawn for veterinary reasons.
