With little moisture in the forecast, it’s likely drought conditions will continue to worsen across the Western Slope this summer. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, as of June 19, all of San Miguel County was experiencing some form of drought, with portions of the West End in the “extreme drought” category.

Animal shelters across the country are overcrowded and overwhelmed. The West End’s Hoof & Paw is no exception. Hoof & Paw was founded in January 2009 and moved to its current location in Naturita in 2017. There are 12 dogs available for adoption, 11 cats and 38 kittens under eight weeks old. As reported by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 6.3 million cats and dogs enter U.S. animal shelters each year, and only 4.1 million are adopted.

The historic Lone Cone Saloon in Norwood caught fire early Tuesday morning. The fire was reported at approximately 5:50 a.m. by early risers Julie Thorneycroft and Davina Mull. Both were getting ready to start their respective baking jobs when they noticed smoke coming from the building.“They called basically two minutes apart,” Norwood Fire Protection District (NFPD) Chief John Bockrath said.
