GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Bob Buys never knew his great-uncle, Sgt. Jim Swartz, but says his legacy and sacrifice live on through the family. "He died nine years before I was born, but I would hear about his name at family reunions," said Buys. "He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1939. He was already a pilot, so I guess the Army Air Corps was excited to have him train pilot." Buys said the plane his great-uncle was flying was shot down by the Japanese.
