SPRINGDALE, Ark. — Bur Edson, the trusted face of 5NEWS’ evening newscasts for over two decades, died Wednesday night at the age of 77. Edson died after a battle with pneumonia, according to his family. Edson was the longest-serving news anchor in the station's history, known for his commanding presence and calm demeanor over two stints at 5NEWS from 1978 to 1986 and 1990 to 2002. He also served as KFSM’s news director for seven years.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Orr Elementary School is closed today, Nov. 4, 2024, due to flooding on campus, according to Fort Smith Public Schools (FSPS). In a statement posted on Facebook, the district said the facilities team is actively working to assess and repair the damage. Officials expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the closure. “The extent of the situation requires us to close the school today,” the statement read.

PEA RIDGE, Ark. — Pea Ridge Junior High School was placed on lockdown Monday morning following an unconfirmed report of a student allegedly carrying what appeared to be a weapon down the hallway, according to the Pea Ridge Police Department (PRPD). Authorities said there is no active threat at the junior high or any other Pea Ridge school campus, and officers are on the scene investigating the situation.

ARKANSAS, USA — As severe storms pushed through Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley overnight Friday into Saturday morning, they left behind widespread damage and power outages. 5NEWS photojournalist Nicole Hellman captured footage of an overturned camper at Dam Site Lake Campground on Beaver Lake. She spoke with the owners, who said they were having dinner in another camper when theirs overturned. No injuries were reported.
