Award-winning St Andrews golf historian Roger McStravick was no stranger to the chaos of conflict when growing up in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, during ‘The Troubles’ of the 1980s. His golf clubhouse was blown up by terrorists three times. A sniper shot a fellow golfer in the head on the ninth green as Roger stood just 150 yards away, waiting for him to finish putting. The victim, who worked part time with the Royal Ulster Constabulary, only survived because he turned his head at the last moment.

Joan Stewart, a former charge nurse at Strathmartine Hospital, Dundee, has died peacefully aged 80. Joan was born in Dundee, the eldest of five children to Bob and Margaret Glass. She was raised in a prefab in Blackshade and attended various primary schools, then Rockwell Secondary. When she left school she went to Seymour Lodge Pre-Nursing College.

Tribute has been paid to a Harley Davidson-loving Dundee man who became a global executive at one of the world’s largest news agencies. Former Reuters Chief Information Officer Ian McCurrach, who grew up in the Dryburgh area of Dundee, has passed away at the age of 77, near his home in the United States. His wife, Pam, who he met at Dundee’s Harris Academy, told The Courier: “He had a happy and full life and had only recently had a decline in health which resulted in his passing on March 23.

Tribute is being paid to retired Dundee bank manager, author, and historian Ian McCraw, who passed away peacefully just days before his 97th birthday. The former Kingsway Circus Royal Bank of Scotland manager wrote several books on local history and was a volunteer with Friends of Dundee City Archives.

Isobel Morton, the “legendary” former teacher who dedicated her entire career to teaching primary sevens at Hillside Primary School in Dundee, has passed away at the age of 88. Warm tributes have been paid to her remarkable contributions to education, with many former pupils recalling her as an “absolute diamond” and “amazing” in heartfelt messages shared on social media. Born on August 25, 1936, at Clement Park Nursing Home, Isobel was the only child of Nan and Bunt Jones of Midmill, Dundee.
