COLUMBIA, Miss. (WDAM) - The Columbia Police Department is in the midst of a major shakeup after several officers, including Chief Michael Kelly, have submitted their resignations, or quit, according to the mayor. Columbia Mayor Justin McKenzie has confirmed that the chief and five other officers have either turned in their resignations or walked away from the police department over the past week. McKenzie says one of the officers has since asked to rescind her resignation.

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) - A Laurel woman is suing several police officers and the City of Laurel for alleged violations of her constitutional rights. The lawsuit stems from a traffic stop on Feb. 2, 2023, which ended with the arrest of plaintiff Jahquilia Stevens for failure to comply with an officer and resisting arrest. Judge Kyle Robertson later dismissed those charges in May of 2023. Attorney Matthew West filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court on Tuesday, May 7, on behalf of Stevens.
