Senate backs Liu’s play on Citi casino

In the end, it wasn’t even close. The state Senate on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly to alienate parkland beneath the parking lot at Citi Field, clearing a major obstacle for New York Mets owner Steve Cohen and his partners in their effort to bring a casino to Flushing. The bill, sponsored by state Sen. John Liu (D-Bayside) and vehemently opposed by Sen. Jessica Ramos (D-Jackson Heights), in whose district most of the roughly 50 acres sits, passed by a final vote of 54-5.

Built in stages beginning in the 1940s, the Fresh Meadows Apartments now include nearly 3,200 units in 140 buildings. Many residents have lived there for decades. The owners have been making the rounds of the community in recent weeks with a proposal to add 2,000 new units, including four high-rise buildings of 12, 14, 19 and 24 stories, respectively.
City to honor its own fallen in Whitestone

Whitestone’s waterfront will be the site of a memorial to the city’s members of the military who have lost their live since the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Plans for the memorial, titled “Flames of Honor,” were announced last week by Mayor Adams and Commissioner James Hendon of the city Department of Veterans Services.

Rozic, Liu sponsor flood prevention bills

Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D-Fresh Meadows) has introduced a bill that would give water and sewer authorities throughout the state specific tools and authority to combat flooding that many may lack. Bill A7467 would permit those agencies to manage stormwater and invest in capital projects to improve resiliency, such as drainage system upgrades. A key component is redefining stormwater as sewage.
NYPD cameras for Kissena Corridor Park

Seven new NYPD security cameras have been installed in and around Kissena Corridor Park near Rachel Carson IS 237 and the East-West International School in Flushing. The new Argus cameras were formally announced by Councilwoman Sandra Ung (D-Flushing) and Inspector Kevin Coleman, commanding officer of the NYPD’s 109th Precinct, at the May 14 meeting of the precinct’s Community Council.
