1. IntroductionWith an increase in the worldwide prevalence of diabetes, better tools have become available to manage the condition. Many new classes of drugs have become available that offer remarkable flexibility for managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM). The first of this new class of T2DM drugs, approved by the FDA in 2005, is glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor analogs (GLP1-As), for example, exenatide. DPP-4 inhibitors (also known as gliptins) were approved in 2006.

“Bloating and gas in pregnancy is the result of increased levels of progesterone, which cause digestion to be slower than normal,” explains Katie Rustici, M.D., a board-certified ob-gyn with Intermountain Health in Denver. “This can cause uncomfortable GI [gastrointestinal] changes, like bloating, gassiness, and constipation.” These symptoms can be a very early symptom of pregnancy, says Rustici, and they may linger until the baby arrives.
