By Michael TraceyINVESTIGATIONS are underway into suspected pyrite or mica in some Carlow homes. The presence of the minerals in building blocks has led to major structural defects for thousands of homeowners across the country. Chief executive of Carlow County Council Coilin O’Reilly said the local authority was aware of three properties locally that had “structural anomalies” and these buildings had been referred to a state body for assessment.

THERE was camaraderie, chat and Christmas cheer at the annual Turkey Trot in Bagenalstown, which raised funds for the wonderful Carlow Kilkenny Homecare Team. A superb turnout of 150 men, women and children took part in this year’s event, which started from the lower stream, headed out to Dunleckney and back in by McGrath Park – a distance of more than 6km.
End of an era as Carlow family business closes its doors after 164 years

ONE of Carlow’s longest-running family businesses has closed its doors for the last time. ‘End of an era’ is thrown around a lot, but it’s hard to shake that feeling as Wally (Walter) Coleman shut the doors on Coleman Cycles on Friday 22 December. Wally has run the cycle and repair shop for over 50 years, while the Colemans have been in business in Carlow town for four generations, over 150 years. Wally does a lot of repair work at the entrance to Coleman’s on Charlotte Street, when he can.

Saturday, December 30, 2023Carlow County Fire & Rescue Service has announced the closure of Leighlin Road this evening due to flooding. The Carlow town to Milford Road is currently closed at Lanigan’s Lock due to flooding as the River Barrow has burst its banks. In a Facebook post, the fire service say the road will be closed overnight. Earlier, the fire service reported a lot of surface water across roads in the county following heavy rain on Friday night.
Hardy souls turn out for Christmas swim at Carlow’s own Forty Foot!

A RECORD number of hardy souls jumped into the River Barrow on Christmas Day in Bagenalstown in aid of a good cause. The 31st Christmas Day swim and walk in aid of Carlow Kilkenny Homecare Team saw over 80 swimmers plunge into the river. A great number of walkers also pounded the pavement on Green Road and gratitude was expressed to all of the supporters who turned out.

A DRINK-DRIVER who performed a wheelie on a motorbike while passing gardaí subsequently jumped into the River Barrow in an attempt to flee, a court was told. Kamil Debowski, Monacurragh, Carlow received a four-month sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, driving in excess of the alcohol limit, driving without insurance and failing to give his name, address and date of birth at Mortarstown, Kilkenny Road, Carlow on 23 August.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is making its message to protect nature clearly heard through its series of successful prosecutions in the courts this year. Forty-three prosecution cases were initiated by NPWS nationally in 2023 for alleged breaches of wildlife legislation according to data from the new Wildlife Enforcement and Nature Protection Directorate within the NPWS.
HSE warns against unwell people visiting nursing homes and hospitals

The HSE in Dublin and South East is issuing an appeal to people in Carlow and the Leinster region region to take whatever steps they can to protect themselves and any vulnerable people around them from the effect of winter viruses. In particular the HSE is asking those who are unwell to stay home until 48 hours after their major symptoms have resolved; avoid visiting people who are more vulnerable if you are unwell, especially avoid visiting hospitals or nursing homes if unwell.

A beloved local café in Carlow town has announced its sudden closure. The popular Bake Café announced on its Facebook page its closure with immediate effect on Friday. ‘It’s been a difficult decision to make but I’ve been left with no option due to rising costs,’ wrote owner Michelle Wilkinson. Michelle thanked its customers and staff past and present for ‘for this amazing journey and family and friends who have helped out at some point. I’ve loved every minute.
