Nicola Glynn and her nephew Harry from the Fighting Cocks were taking part in a St Patrick’s Day parade in Stradbally when the accident happened.

By Michael TraceyINVESTIGATIONS are underway into suspected pyrite or mica in some Carlow homes. The presence of the minerals in building blocks has led to major structural defects for thousands of homeowners across the country. Chief executive of Carlow County Council Coilin O’Reilly said the local authority was aware of three properties locally that had “structural anomalies” and these buildings had been referred to a state body for assessment.

THERE was camaraderie, chat and Christmas cheer at the annual Turkey Trot in Bagenalstown, which raised funds for the wonderful Carlow Kilkenny Homecare Team. A superb turnout of 150 men, women and children took part in this year’s event, which started from the lower stream, headed out to Dunleckney and back in by McGrath Park – a distance of more than 6km.

ONE of Carlow’s longest-running family businesses has closed its doors for the last time. ‘End of an era’ is thrown around a lot, but it’s hard to shake that feeling as Wally (Walter) Coleman shut the doors on Coleman Cycles on Friday 22 December. Wally has run the cycle and repair shop for over 50 years, while the Colemans have been in business in Carlow town for four generations, over 150 years. Wally does a lot of repair work at the entrance to Coleman’s on Charlotte Street, when he can.

Saturday, December 30, 2023Carlow County Fire & Rescue Service has announced the closure of Leighlin Road this evening due to flooding. The Carlow town to Milford Road is currently closed at Lanigan’s Lock due to flooding as the River Barrow has burst its banks. In a Facebook post, the fire service say the road will be closed overnight. Earlier, the fire service reported a lot of surface water across roads in the county following heavy rain on Friday night.
