The jury confirmed to a judge Thursday morning that it was unable to reach an agreement on a verdict in the Christopher Schurr trial. Schurr faced a second-degree murder charge for the death of Patrick Lyoya. The jury began deliberating Monday, May 5. The next day, jurors told the judge they'd reached a deadlock. But 17th Circuit Court Judge Christina Mims told them to keep working towards a verdict. On Thursday she accepted the jury was deadlocked and said she'd declare a mistrial.

As more voters use absentee ballots, Grand Rapids officials are considering a plan to redraw the city’s voting map, shrinking the number of precincts. Some residents are worried that chopping up and combining existing precincts will disenfranchise voters, particularly in the city’s third ward. A Michigan Public analysis of the proposed changes found the distance between polling places and farthest edges of most precincts would shorten or remain roughly similar. Some would increase slightly.

The state health department said Thursday Michigan has its first measles outbreak (defined as three or more connected cases) since 2019. That makes a total of seven cases this year, including a one-year-old girl from Ingham County. Officials say the infected child may have exposed other children at a local daycare. There are over 700 measles cases nationwide, according to 2025 numbers from the Centers for Disease Control.
