The Seattle Kraken traded for center Frederick Gaudreau from the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, in exchange for a fourth-round selection in this summer’s 2025 NHL Entry Draft, opening Friday in Los Angeles. The addition of Gaudreau is another turn of the off-season crank by Kraken general manager Jason Botterill, who pledged an aggressive approach with roster management at the end of last season which wrapped up with the firing of head coach Dan Bylsma and a shuffle in the front office structure.

An “aggressive” off-season is underway with two trades in three days. Forget July 1, the first day of NHL free agency. It’s not even draft week.  Seattle Kraken general manager Jason Botterill, two days after acquiring Mason Marchment in a trade with the Dallas Stars, continued his early re-shaping of the roster ahead of the 2025-26 season in an eye-catching one-for-one trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.

With a “lock and key” approach a part of the forefront in this summer’s coaching vacancy, the Seattle Kraken have given Lane Lambert the proverbial key for unlocking potential, his job to unlock the door. Lambert was named new head coach of the Kraken on Thursday, officially succeeding Dan Bylsma, fired after one season and a 35-41-6 record. The Kraken missed the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

It’s no surprise that many NHL coaching searches keep matters extremely locked shut, key eaten, and message self-destructing in the less amount of time it takes to warm up leftovers in the microwave. As vacancies become spoken for, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue, we’re however at the point where a move could be made very soon in Seattle.

The sun is shining on Seattle with more beaming growth in the city’s sports scene. The Professional Women’s Hockey League will be next. The 16-month-old league announced a move that was long-anticipated on Wednesday, expanding into the Seattle market with a team that will debut starting in the 2025-26 season as part of a league outreach effort across North America.
