    CINCINNATI — Former Winton Woods Middle School star Kameron Mercer is ranked the nation’s No. 5 basketball player in the debut of the 2028 ESPN 25 player rankings. Mercer, a Huntington (W. Va.) Expression Prep 6-foot-5 point guard, has advanced to the final tryout for the USA Basketball U16 team May 22-24 in Colorado, with the final roster scheduled to be announced later this month, according to his family.

    OXFORD, Ohio — Miami University defensive coordinator Bill Brechin is glad he doesn’t have to worry about competing against quarterback Dequan Finn anymore. “Scary,” Brechin said with a smile after a spring practice last week. “For me, I’m now glad I have him now on our team.”Finn, 24, signed with Miami in January after being with Baylor in 2024. Prior to that, the Detroit native spent five seasons as the Toledo quarterback.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio High School Athletic Association football administrator Beau Rugg acknowledged Thursday morning that this upcoming season could see a reduction in the number of playoff qualifiers per region. The OHSAA sent a football survey to member school principals, athletic directors and football head coaches April 21 that asked for opinions about the sport including a 10-week regular season, a six-week tournament and the preference for the number of postseason qualifiers per region.
