Smith’s Food and Drug officials and approximately 2,500 of their workers in New Mexico seem to have avoided a strike that could have begun this weekend, coming to tentative terms on a new, four-year contract early Tuesday. But the deal does nothing to head off the possibility of a strike by approximately 1,200 Albertsons employees in New Mexico, as their extended contract is due to expire this weekend as well.

Most of the businesses located along Canyon Road are devoted to art or dining. The owners of a new enterprise along that historic street are trying to introduce horticulture to the mix. Beth Succop and Dave Sessions opened Xylem & Phloem, Artful Plants on June 4. The 350-square-foot space, which served for years as the home to the Judy Ortiz Studio Gallery, is located at 821 Canyon Road No. 2 and features succulents, tropicals and air plants, alongside home gifts and plant-themed art.

While it’s a story that is still in the process of unfolding, it’s clear that a potential strike by unionized workers at two of New Mexico’s largest grocery store chains is a situation that is being closely monitored by the public. In a story I wrote for the June 17 edition of The New Mexican, I reported that unionized employees of Albertsons and Smith’s Food & Drug stores across the state would be voting on whether to authorize a strike.

Officials from a Louisville, Ky.-based restaurant chain that is opening a location in Santa Fe say they are on target for a fall opening here and plan on hiring 200 workers. A Texas Roadhouse location is under construction at 4399 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe and is expected to open in September, according to spokesperson Stephanie Keck. According to a news release, Texas Roadhouse is encouraging potential employees to apply through an online portal at becomearoadie.com.
