Two crashes nearly an hour apart on Interstate 35 in Johnson County brought traffic to a slow crawl in both directions on Thursday afternoon. The Kansas Highway Patrol said the first crash happened on southbound Interstate 35 at U.S. 69 Highway in Lenexa at 2 p.m.According to the highway patrol’s online crash log, three vehicles were in the same lane when traffic slowed. The driver of a semi truck slowed for traffic ahead, causing the driver of an Infiniti SUV to rear-end the semi.

A Lenexa man charged in the deaths of his mother and aunt was transferred from a Missouri jail to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center on Friday to face murder charges. Lenexa Police say that Luke Anthony Howard, 34, is responsible for the shooting deaths of his mother, Valerie Howard, 63, and his aunt, Joyce Austin, 71, which occurred in early February at the home at which both women and Luke Howard resided.

One man is dead and another is in police custody following a shooting on Saturday night in Olathe. In a news release Sunday morning, Olathe Police Sgt. John Moncayo said officers were called to the 1400 block of East Mart-Way Circle at 9:54 p.m. Saturday to investigate an unknown call for the police. The address officers responded to is a quadruplex just northeast of North Ridgeview Road and East Harold Street, directly behind Washington Elementary School and Santa Fe Trail Middle School.

Shawnee police and firefighters are investigating a deadly apartment fire that happened late Friday evening near 65th Street and Nieman Road. Firefighters from three area departments were called to 6506 Barton Cir., in the Pinegate West apartments, at 7:27 p.m. The complex is just east of Gum Springs Park.

Updated: Friday, March 28Olathe Police say a 62-year-old has died from injuries suffered in a crash earlier this month. First responders were called to the scene near 138th Street and South Greenwood Street on the evening of March 11. They found the man in critical condition. Police later said the man had been on foot when a vehicle, a 2015 Volvo XC60 SUV, rear-ended a landscape company’s pickup truck and trailer, which was parked on the side of the road.
