This is the time of year when parents ask, when does school start? The answer is, Haverhill students in grades 1-12 report on Tuesday, Aug. 27. They have an early release day that Friday and are off the following Monday, Sept. 2, which is Labor Day. For the 2024-2025 school calendar, visit online at tinyurl.com/4xjurbzs. The city is looking to hire lifeguards for the Plug Pond swimming area after a tragic drowning there during the Fourth of July weekend. City Councilor Melissa Lewandowski, chair of Natural Resources and Public Property subcommittee, hosted a meeting last Wednesday in which city officials discussed and refined proposed ordinances related to Haverhill’s parks, conservation areas, ponds, lakes and other natural resources. The meeting also crafted regulations that will allow for camping.

Gov. Maura Healey made another historic investment in higher education on July 29 when she signed the Massachusetts FY25 state budget that includes free tuition and fees to all of the state’s 15 community colleges. Attending a community college such as Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill and Lawrence is now tuition- and fee-free for Massachusetts residents under the newly-created MassEducate program. “We are thrilled to support the MassEducate program,” said NECC President Lane Glenn.
