    A volunteer firefighter with the Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Capt. Lee Puryear, rescued a man from the basement of a burning home on Link Puryear Road on April 14. “That’s what I signed up to do,” Puryear humbly stated. Still, Puryear said it made him feel good that he got to the scene of the fire when he did and was able to get the man trapped in the basement to safety. “If I hadn’t gotten there when I did, he probably would be dead right now,” Puryear acknowledged.

    The future of two proposed solar sites in northern Halifax County still is uncertain after the board of supervisors cast a 4-4 tied vote on the sites at their Monday evening meeting. At the meeting, several citizens held up signs displaying the word “solar” with a line struck through it, indicating they did not want the supervisors to approve any more solar projects.

    In a change in date this year, the Turbeville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department’s annual South Boston Truck & Tractor Pull typically held in July is slated for May 17. The location is the same — the Halifax County Fairgrounds. Gates will open at 4 p.m. and the pull will start at 6 p.m.“We wanted to have it at a cooler time of the year when more people can come out and enjoy it,” said Pat Turner, secretary of Turbeville Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
