New annual appointments were made to the White County Board of Commissioners during its September meetingCommissioner Derrick Hutchings was appointed as chairman for the board of commissioners for the next 12 months, while David Cranford was appointed vice-chairman. Hutchings replaces Kyle Goff who had served as chairman for the term from September 2023 through August 2024. Lanny Selby was appointed as the committee’s parliamentarian.

Friends, concerned residents, and former White County High School basketball players who were coached by Roy Whited more than two decades ago gathered at the WCHS gym, on Sept. 17, to hear updates about the search for the beloved community member who disappeared more than four months ago. Whited was reported missing May 3, 2024.

Illinois Valley Community College’s Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble open their fall seasons in separate concerts next week. The Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, and the Wind Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Both concerts are free and will be in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre. The Jazz Ensemble concert will feature selections with soloists, standards and some surprises.

It’s going to be a busy sports day at St. Bede Academy Saturday to cap Homecoming Week. St. Bede will honor its 2023 Hall of Fame inductees and its 2023 State Championship softball team as part of Homecoming ceremonies. The Bruins will be playing Elmwood Park for the Homecoming football game at 1 p.m.The St. Bede Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023 inductions will kick off the day at 10 a.m. in Abbot Vincent Gymnasium.

Six classmates from the 2021 Princeton regional championship volleyball team are playing collegiately this fall. Sophomores McKenzie Hecht (OH), Maya Gartin (MH/OPP) and Gracee Funderberg (OPP) are teaming up for Sauk Valley. They are joined by freshman Tori Balma (OPP/S) of Putnam County. The Skyhawks will play at IVCC on Oct. 11. The IVCC volleyball team is off to a 10-5 start under first-year coach Kaitlyn Edgcomb, a former IVCC player and Putnam County alum.

Smells of coffee and breakfast sandwiches fill the train station in downtown Crystal Lake as the deli, Breaking Bread, serves a full menu of sandwiches, new coffees, teas and breakfast bakery goods. Originally located at 230 W. Virginia St. in Crystal Lake, the sandwich shop opened in the train station at 70 E. Woodstock Ave. earlier in September.

Sitting on a corner lot across from Marmaduke Playground, Hannah and Matthew Gregory’s large North Side home is full of light and beautiful woodwork. “We wanted to stay here in this house forever but we got a job out of state – a big move – to New Hampshire,” said Mrs. Gregory. It’s a significant move with two very young children and means leaving behind their beloved 1910 Foursquare and Marmaduke Park with its state-of-the-art playground across the street.
