Event to raise awareness for cancer survivors this weekend

BREWER, Maine (WABI) - June 1st was National Cancer survivors day. One celebration in Brewer got postponed to Sunday, June 22nd and they want locals to come out and support. The day is meant to honor those living with a history of cancer and raise awareness about the challenges survivors face. The Purple Iris Foundation will be hosting a National Cancer Survivors Day event in Brewer on Sunday at Mason’s Brewing company starting at 10:45AM.
Bangor hospital catches moose on the loose in on camera

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) -A moose on the loose happens in Maine ... but it’s not often we see one running the streets of Bangor and heading to the local hospitals, but as you can see, St. Joseph Healthcare caught this young moose on camera this Sunday. We saw other reports of the moose spotted on Stillwater Avenue and other spots. You can see this moose decided to make a quick turn at the last second, but not before it was caught on camera going for a Sunday morning stroll in the sun.
Hiker describes conditions at Katahdin on day of search for father and daughter

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) -It’s been a tragic week at Baxter State Park where two hikers died on the trails of Katahdin. We spoke with a woman who was one of the last to go up to the summit before it was closed to search for 58-year-old Tim Keiderling and his daughter, 28-year-old Esther Keiderling. Melissa Bellavance spoke to us Thursday from where she is staying at Appalachian Trail Hostel & Outfitters in Millinocket.
Downtown Bangor coffee shop temporarily closes

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A downtown Bangor restaurant has closed, for now. It’s the owner’s third business to close this year. There’s a handwritten sign outside of The Grind House that says they’re closed -- temporarily -- see you soon, with a smiley face. Dave Reesman has owned the business since 2018. According to the Maine Revenue Service, they served the business a revocation and the door was stickered on May 14th.
Bangor Beautiful begins latest project on Main Street fence

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Making Bangor more beautiful one mural at a time. That’s the goal of one non-profit that keeps finding spaces to create memorable art for everyone to enjoy. Bangor Beautiful has been adding art all around the city for several years now. Their latest spot is the fence that runs in front of Maine Savings Amphitheater. They say the 760-foot series of murals will be done in three stages. The hope behind the project is simple -- that the art makes people smile.
Appeal denied for notice of violation against owner of historic home in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) -An appeal by a Bangor homeowner of a notice of violation for work done on his roof was unanimously denied by the city’s board of appeals Thursday night. We spoke to Steven Farren earlier this week. He has owned his home for just under eight years. The city of Bangor served him a notice of violation after he pursued replacing the slate on the roof of his historic home with asphalt.
Missing Milbridge man’s family thanks community for continuing search efforts

MILBRIDGE, Maine (WABI) -A Downeast community is grieving as they once again search for one of their own who went missing on the water. Family members of a missing Milbridge man say they won’t stop searching until they bring him home. 51-year-old Alton Wallace went missing in the area of Narraguagus Bay Sunday. Wallace was reported missing by a family member after he did not return from harvesting clams. The Marine Patrol used Wallace’s last cell phone ping to determine a location for the search.
Former Taekwondo instructor accused of sexually assaulting child for a year

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) -A former Bangor Taekwondo instructor accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl made his first court appearance Monday. 59-year-old John Keeler is charged with 10 counts of gross sexual assault with a child under 12, as well as other unlawful sexual misconduct charges. Keeler was arrested Friday. The Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office says he worked as a Taekwondo instructor in the Bangor area.
Bangor Humane Society invites the public to attend kitten shower

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) -The Bangor Humane Society is holding a kitten shower and everyone is invited!The shelter says they’re expecting...a lot of kittens this spring, so they are gathering supplies to prepare for all of the little babies. The public is welcome to come to the shelter on Mount Hope Avenue to snuggle ... and possibly adopt ... kittens, like two-month-old Pickle, from noon to three at the shelter Saturday, May 17th. They say there will be puppies there, too.
Maine State Police investigating suspicious death in Penobscot County

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North is investigating a suspicious death that happened in Etna.State police investigators were spotted at a home Friday morning.Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said there is no danger to the public and no other information is available.WMTW media partner WABI also contacted Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton, who could not confirm or release information at the time. But Morton also said there is no threat to the public.
