May is National Wildfire Awareness Month, which aims to promote prevention and preparedness leading into the summer wildfire season. While northern Utah is looking at an average fire season, projections place Southern Utah at a higher risk moving into June, according to the National Interagency Coordination Center. Increasing summer temperatures, coupled with dried-out vegetation caused by the resurgent drought, do not paint a good outlook for the area’s chances.

St. George officials are lauding an amendment by Congresswoman Celeste Maloy that was added to a portion of a proposed federal budget bill Wednesday. The amendment allows for the potential sale of hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in Nevada and Utah, including land in Washington County that the city of St. George hopes to obtain for infrastructure expansion.

Just as visitation at the park has increased in recent years — up 164% between 2013 and 2023 — so have incidents of dispersed camping on federal and state-managed land, to the point that people are camping in areas that are protected.
