    Summer thunderstorms hit the St. George area Monday afternoon. For a short while, heavy rain fell, accompanied by a warning of potential flash flooding in wilderness areas like slot canyons, dry washes and burn scars, according to the National Weather Service. While wilderness areas are prone to flash flooding, the weather service also advised that the rain may cause street flooding, as well as minor flooding and water pooling in urban areas.

    Hundreds gathered at the SunRiver Veterans Honor Park in St. George to observe Memorial Day in remembrance of fallen soldiers and those missing in action. “On Memorial Day, we have the solemn obligation to remember those that gave their all, so we can be here to share our thoughts and memories of them,” John Kelley, a veteran and the event’s master of ceremonies, said Monday. A wreath was set in the middle of the park’s veterans memorial, where the names of military veterans can be seen on bricks.

    The recent death of a 9-year-old who was hit by a golf cart driven by a 12-year-old has the St. George Police Department urging parents and others to teach their children about the rules of the road. And to pay attention to safety guidelines when riding bikes, scooters and carts. On May 4, Steven Yu was riding an electric scooter in the area of 2780 East and Flycatcher Drive. Police said the 9-year-old was turning onto 2780 East when he collided with the golf cart driven by a 12-year-old girl.
