Over the next seven days, Oregon voters will decide who they want to lead their local school districts. School boards make key decisions that impact 197 districts and more than half a million students across the state. Parents, school staff and taxpayers all have a stake in these elections, if nothing else, because our tax money pays for public education. Oregon school board positions are unpaid and voluntary.

In just over a week, Portland voters will decide whether to keep supporting property taxes to pay for building improvements in Oregon’s largest school district. If the proposed bond measure passes on May 20, it would authorize a continuation of property taxes, paying for building construction, health and safety efforts, and new technology for the district’s more than 43,500 students. In November 2020, Portland Public Schools asked voters to support a $1.2 billion bond to fund continued work modernizing the district’s high schools. In addition to the funds for schools, investments in technology and other upgrades, the bond set aside money to create a new facility called the Center for Black Student Excellence.
