    LOS ANGELES, Calif. — According to the 2022 U.S. census report, over two million people from El Salvador live in the U.S., and over a third live in Los Angeles. Los Angeles-based Salvadoran writer Karla Vasqez saw a gap in the media's representation of Salvadoran food and culture, so she wrote a cookbook called "The SalviSoul Cookbook." It's a cookbook that celebrates the food stories of the Salvadoran diaspora in the U.S., particularly in Los Angeles.

    LOS ANGELES — Researchers from UCLA and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles are asking for help from the public to study how wildfire smoke affects local birds. The program is called Project Phoenix, a community science monitoring project to study the effects of smoke on birds in neighborhoods across California, Oregon and Washington. Volunteers who sign up are asked to observe birds for 10 minutes a week and log their findings in the Project Phoenix app.

Within Japanese communities, summer also means Obon season — colorful block-party style community gatherings that honor their ancestors. Spectrum News attended the Obon at Venice Hongwanji Buddist Temple, where their celebration drew hundreds from the community. Obon season begins in June and runs through the first weekend of August.

The event partners with hundreds of restaurants around Los Angeles to offer special menus, prices, secret dishes and more. At Homegirl Café in Downtown, general manager Pamela Herrera is bracing for a fast-paced two weeks of DineLA customers. It’s the cafe’s third year participating in the event, and Herrera reports their numbers skyrocket, simply by being part of the promotion ahead of the event.
