May 8—MITCHELL — Following a stellar freshman season, Dakota Wesleyan women's golfer Allison Meyerink was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference player of the year and newcomer of the year on Thursday. The Mitchell native scored three event victories and six top-three finishes, highlighted by an individual victory at the GPAC Championships on April 28 and 29. Her showing there also earned her a spot in the NAIA national meet, which takes place from May 13-16.

PARKSTON, S.D. — Ethan/Parkston’s James Deckert was so close to taking home the Class A long jump title multiple years in a row. In both 2022 and 2023, he came into the state meet as one of the favorites to win, but fell short of a title both times, taking fourth place on both occassions. But Deckert broke through in 2024, claiming his first long jump state title as a junior.

VERMILLION, S.D. — When University of South Dakota linebacker Nate Ewell walked off the field at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman, Montana in December following USD's FCS playoff semifinal defeat to Montana State, it was supposed to be his last time suiting up for the Coyotes. Ewell arrived in Vermillion ahead of last season as a graduate transfer from NAIA program Grand View, and only had one year of eligibility remaining.

BURKE, S.D. — The Burke girls track and field team, along with the Winner boys track and field team, claimed team titles at the Meet of Legends, hosted by Burke on Tuesday. The Cougars ran away with the girls title (328), topping second-place Chamberlain (121) by a staggering 207 points with Winner (120) and Corsica-Stickney (100) rounding out the top four.
