A Selma man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for being in possession of a machinegun conversion devices, also known as Glock-switches, said an announcement from U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello. According to the announcement Mark Anthony Wallace, 26, was pulled over on Feb. 2, 2024 by Dallas County Sheriff Deputies for a traffic violation. He was then found to have a gun with a machinegun conversion device attached with a high-capacity magazine.

Gee's Bend quilter Cathy Mooney will debut her first solo exhibition titled "Stitched Up" at Gallery 905 in Selma on June 5, curated by Paul Barrett and sponsored by The St. James Hotel. A press release from Gallery 905 said that Mooney is a native of Gee's Bend. She learned how to quilt using repurposed cotton fabrics and blends from her mother and grandmothers. A quilt by her grandmother Lottie Mooney was featured on a U.S. postage stamp in 2006.

A man from Selma was recently sentenced to eight years in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. An announcement from U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello said that Marquavius Benjamin, 25, was found to be in possession of a Glock on Oct. 4, 2024 after Selma police were called to Creekside Apartments on a report about a stolen vehicle. When an officer responded to the scene and spoke to the victim they were alerted to noises that prompted the officer to investigate.
